Managing your time well and being as productive as possible can make a huge difference for you as a caregiver. Getting to that seemingly mythical state doesn’t have to be as difficult as it sounds.
Streamline Your Processes
Everything that you do has a process, whether you recognize it that way or not. There’s a certain way that you handle bill paying, grocery shopping, and all the other little tasks you need to manage during a week. Some of your processes might be what’s called “bloated.” This means that there are extra steps or there’s something simpler you could do. For example, if you manually pay bills every month, perhaps it’s worth looking into autopay for at least a few of them. Then, when you would ordinarily write checks and put stamps on envelopes, spend that time reconciling your statement instead. This helps to save both mental and emotional energy.
Unplug More Often
Most people are really connected these days. Those smartphones are always there and chances are good that more than a few family members and friends text you several times a day. Make a deal with yourself that you’ll spend a small part of every day unplugged from your smartphone or your computer. Those few minutes here and there checking on your electronics really do add up.
Eat the Frog Early in the Day
There’s a time management strategy that advises you to eat that frog as early in the day as possible. In this analogy, a frog is a task you’re dreading and that you’re tempted to avoid completely. The best idea, according to the strategy, is to tackle that frog first thing in the morning. Then you have the entire rest of the day to do whatever else needs to be done. The bonus is that you have already knocked something really big off your to-do list.
Hire Some Help
Being a caregiver is a never-ending job. There is always something that has to be done, usually over and over again. Friends and family might be able to help a little bit, but that doesn’t mean that they’ll be able to be there as consistently as you need them to be. This is when hiring a senior care provider can help you to figure out how to revamp your schedule so that it works for you rather than against you. Elder care providers can take over where you leave off with almost no difference for your aging adult.
As you gradually learn more about how to be more productive as a caregiver you’ll start to see areas in which you can whittle out even better results. Give yourself time to get to peak productivity. No one becomes super-efficient with time management overnight.
